2/23/2015:Orville and Wilbur Wright - Free Spirits

I wrote recently about some of my original books on inventors.  If you are looking for other inventor options, check out my original reader Orville and Wilbur Wright - Free Spirits.
In this Level T reader your students will learn facts about Orville and Wilbur Wright, who were early pioneers of flight, and their invention of a flying machine.

This is a great resource to combine social studies and language arts.  The book comes with 5 companion worksheets which reinforce literacy skills involving reading, language, spelling, and writing. Specific concepts, skills, and vocabulary targeted in this 5th grade Level T reader are listed on the first page of the story.

This story is one of the books in the collection of Level T - Set 2 readers. The ten books in that collection are:

- Alternative Energy Sources – Wind, Solar, Geothermal, and Hydroelectric Power;
- John Deere – An Improved Plow;
- Founding of St. Augustine, 1565;
- Orville and Wilbur Wright – Free Spirits;
- Fun with Words – Simile, Metaphor, and Onomatopoeia;

11/11/2014: Happy Veterans Day, and the Start of a Sale!

A Veterans Day Play is an original play written for use as readers’ theater, as a part of balanced literacy (Read-Aloud, Shared and Performance Reading or Guided Reading), or for an actual play production.

Written with 9 speaking parts, the play also features a band and choir of unlimited members. The band marches in a parade that the family (mother, father and two children) comes to see on Veteran’s Day and the choir sings the national anthem, as well as additional patriotic songs when the play is over. With an announcer, two parade assistants and three narrators, you are all set to put on this play that helps us all learn more about this important holiday of honoring our veterans.

Another option available from my store is Veteran's Day - First Grade Level E Reader
This first grade Level E reader is a excellent resource for teaching about Veteran's Day. Students will learn about why and when we celebrate Veteran's Day as they encounter new vocabulary and improve their reading comprehension. There is a two-page worksheet which accompanies the two-page story.

8/1/2014: TpT Sale, and Happy Birthday Francis Scott Key!

Happy August 1st!

It is hard to believe that it is already August and that summer will soon be coming to an end.  Haven Hill Learning will be participating in the Teachers Pay Teachers “Blast Off Back to School Sale” August 4-5.   Please visit our store and prepare for the exciting school year ahead!

Today is also the birthday of Francis Scott Key.  The Star-Spangled Banner author  was born in Frederick County, Maryland in 1779.  During the War of 1812, on September 13–14, 1814 he watched Fort McHenry being bombed by the British forces in the Battle of Baltimore.  In the morning, Key could see that the American flag was still flown over Fort McHenry, showing that the Americans had not lost possession of it. The inspired Key’s to write a poem, which became “The Star-Spangled Banner”

Learn more about Francis Scott Key with your class with my book Francis Scott Key and The Star-Spangled Banner: First Grade - Level I Reader.
This first grade Level I reader gives students the interesting background of the United States national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner".  Francis Scott Key and the American Flag are also featured in First Grade Level I – Set 2

3/8/2014 Happy International Women's Day!

Perhaps you have seen the video on Google’s homepage, which includes women from all around the world including activist Malala Yousafzai and Dalia GrybauskaitÄ— the President of Lithuania.  International Women’s Day was first celebrated on March 19, 1911 by people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.  In some parts of the world today International Women’s Day is celebrated in a similar way to our Mother’s Day celebrations in America.
According to the United Nations “International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.  This year’s theme, “Equality for women is progress for all”  emphasizes how gender equality, empowerment of women, women’s full enjoyment of human rights and the eradication of poverty are essential to economic and social development. It also stresses the vital role of women as agents of development.”  In the United States, International Women’s Day falls during our celebration of Women’s History Month.

March is the perfect time to share my collection of leveled readers Famous Women in History: Leveled Books for Grades 2 - 4 with your class.  This series includes books on eight notable American women, including Clara Barton and Helen Keller.   My Teachers Pay Teachers site also includes individual readers on other remarkable women such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Sojourner Truth, among others.
